A Guide for Beginners

As a beginner English learner, you may encounter the following problems:

  • You want to learn English, but don't know where to start.
  • News, movies, books are too difficult to understand.
  • You have experienced school English learning, but have almost forgotten everything. A humorous guy once said:

Hi everyone, I'm an English beginner with 10 years of experience. (大家好,我是10年经验的英语初学者)

Most of those I contacted don't aspire to become highly skilled English speakers, but simply want to use English to read, watch TV, and enjoy the language.

So, this guide is for you. We will help you get started with English learning, and make it fun and easy.

Theory

Let's start with observing a little baby and how they acquire their first language.

  1. First, they learn the words MAMA, DADA, and understand these refer to the people who take care of them.
  2. Then, they learn the words "MILK", "WATER", and understand these refer to the food they eat.
  3. As they get a little older, they can say "I MILK", "Red Car" to express more complex needs.
  4. As time goes by, they listen more, express more, and language becomes a part of them.

This is a natural process, and we can learn from it. Language is a tool for expressing and receiving information. Information is the most important aspect. Grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary - these are just tools. Why can mute people live in the world and express themselves? Not because they can speak the language, not because others can understand their sign language, but because they do their best to use everything at their disposal to express themselves.

Example:

  • When you learn English from phrases like "How are you? I'm fine, thank you, and you?", you may find it boring.
  • When you learn English just to pass the IELTS exam, and listen to "SECTION 1, Good morning. What can I do for you?" all day, it's boring.
  • When you learn English from resources like "Top 2000 Words", "Grammar in Use", it's boring.

All of these methods are designed to help you acquire the language, but not the information. What you need is not just to acquire the language, then use it. No! It doesn't work that way. These methods can become barriers in your English learning journey because they are boring, and they mislead you into thinking English is boring. That's not true.

Can We back to as a baby, just get the information, and get the language finally? Yes, we can. Don't believe me? Let's do an experiment.
